Change of Address Checklist: Who to Notify When You Move

moving checklist

There are lots of people and places that need to be informed when moving house. It’s a good idea to declare your move at your local Post Office, so that all post can be redirected without a problem, but this doesn’t eliminate the need to inform others of your move. Most places can be informed of your change of address online, saving you lots of time, but others might not be so easy. Make sure to tell everyone that needs to know before moving day, so that the only thing you’ll need to worry about is unpacking your home – not sorting out your electricity provider! If you’re moving house and you’re unsure of who needs to know, here’s a handy and helpful checklist to assist you!

health care

Health:
Even if you’re not moving too far away, it’s important to tell your doctor, dentist, orthodontist and optician of your change of address. You might need to find new establishments if you’re out of the catchment area, so take the time to do this in advance so that you can register elsewhere if needed. This isn’t always a fast process, so try to get this done as soon as possible. This is especially important if you’re moving with children, or any family member who is prone to illness.

Finance:
There are lots of people who need to be contacted in the finance sector if you’re moving. Start by informing your bank, as well as your employer, so that all correspondence reaches you at your new address. Don’t forget to alert any credit card companies, pension companies or insurance companies as well. One of the most important establishments to notify of your change of address is the council, as your council tax bills will need to be arranged. Put this as a top priority to avoid charges and fines.

house utilities

Utilities:
Your water, gas and electric companies will all need to be made aware of your change of address so that you won’t need to worry about your bills. This can usually be done online or over the phone, but you might need to change companies depending on where you’re moving to. Before moving day, set aside some time to make sure this is done in advance – you want to be sure your property has heating, water and light before you move! Other companies that you might want to make aware can include the TV licensing company, your internet or telephone provider and your television company.

Your car:
The DVLA will need to be made aware of your change of address, as well as your car insurance company and your breakdown recovery company. Doing this before you move will mean that you won’t need to worry about anything going wrong or becoming a problem after you’ve arrived at your new property! You might also want to think about changing the address on your driver’s license. This can be done online, and is worth doing if you’re moving to a property on a long-term basis.

Everything else:
From magazine subscriptions to your local library, you might need to change your address or re-register. Schools, playgroups, colleges, and your milk deliveries might also need to be sorted out. Again, this can all be done in advance to save you time and hassle. Try to make a list of anything that might need changing, or any company that might need information of your change of address, so that you can be prepared and ready before moving day finally comes along.
